Unika has a vision of a world in which all older people can lead dignified, active, healthy, and secure lives.
Our mission is to achieve positive change for older people in Malawi not limited to – ensuring that they enjoy their right to healthcare, social services and economic and physical security.
We fight poverty
We work with people in later life so that they can lift themselves out of poverty. Enable older men and women to have secure incomes. We do this by providing the tools and training to start small businesses, sometimes using traditional skills that only older people have. At Nantenje Village – Hope for the Elderly are running livestock banks so older people can make a living from raising animals.
We help older people in ill-health
We make sure healthcare services take the health needs of older people into account. Enable elders and those they support to receive quality health, HIV and Aids care services. We are working on providing basic medical kits and support mobile health vehicles that can reach older people in remote communities.
We fight for older people to be heard
We campaign to change policies that keep older people poor and marginalised. We want to build local movements that enable older people to challenge age discrimination and claim their rights.
We reach older people in emergencies
With the help of our partners, we work to provide age-friendly essentials such as food parcels, shelter and medical help. We also make sure people in later life aren’t forgotten – it’s not uncommon for older people to be pushed aside in the scramble for food or aid.
We work to relief unemployment
We assist the young and older persons in our community to find employment, facilitate training programmes, run workshops and empowerment programmes to build stronger communities and improve older persons to enjoy better, sustainable and secure lives.
